“Stott has established herself as a sensitive interpreter of French music with recitals of Fauré and Debussy, and now here she is in Ravel – and in two works at least (Gaspard and Le tombeau de Couperin) which are technically especially challenging.
… I’m glad to be able to praise a fluid but unhurried Jeux d’eau that is well served, too, by the velvety-rich recorded sound … it ‘s attractive. So are the Sonatine, and the tenderly solemn Pavane pour une infante défunte ” (Gramophone)
“A most enjoyable recital, and one for which many listeners will be grateful. . . . What is Impressive here is the pianist’s integration of fragility and firmness, simplicity and complexity …” (Gramophone) “nothing but praise for her playing: Stott is at once so warmly intense, so poetic, so refined. She also draws the loveliest variegated tone from her piano, to which her engineers do full justice throughout the whole gamut.” (BBC Radio 3)

“Kathryn Stott’s Chopin is very romantic, seldom understated, with a wide dynamic range… she can change from a raptly gentle manner to a passionate ardour, yet she touches the listener by her very calmness.”
— Penguin Guide
“Right from the start she opens your ears to the mystery of shadow-land and night. Her playing is both deeply felt and sensitive, and always with melody beguilingly sung. … I’ve rarely enjoyed it more.”

The iconoclastic British independent classical label Unicorn Records achieved a global reputation for showcasing rare repertoire and emerging or underrated (at the time) artists – and always in superbly engineered recordings. One of the first “breakthrough” artists launched by the label was top Chandos pianist Kathryn Stott, whose recording of the complete nocturnes of Chopin, an outstanding release from the label’s early years, returns to the international catalogue at a super-value price.
