Alexander Gretchaninov: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom No. 4

Father Alexei Godunov / Father Alexander Korotsky / Ludmila Arshavskaya / Cantus Sacred Music Ensemble

Catalogue Number: ALC 1069
Number of Discs: 1

“One hardly expects such richness of harmony simply looking at the page. Grechaninov employs some very subtle harmonic shading (for example, in the first and second antiphons and the memorable Creed) to decorate what are essentially plain liturgical settings. Both the Cherubic Hymn and the Lord’s Prayer are beautiful, and would work splendidly in an actual celebration. The Cantus Sacred Music Ensemble respond very well to the music…..Otherwise, the priests’ and deacon’s parts are sung with great gusto and the litanies especially well done.”

Rare, evocative sacred Russian music from the late romantic era returns to the catalogue
