Description
“Remains first choice for those wanting these works in a modern-instrument performance with first-class digital sound… moreover, unusually complete”
— Penguin Guide [3 stars]
Barry Tuckwell is one of the greatest instrumental soloists of the recording era. He began his career as one of the most in-demand orchestral players of the mid-20th century, playing in a number of orchestras before joining the London Symphony Orchetsra, where he also served as chairman of the board for six years. He resigned from the orchestra in 1968 to pursue a career as a soloist and conductor, and over the next thirty years he carved out a career exclusively as a soloist — the only horn virtuoso to have done so, rather than combining occasional concert performances with an orchestral position or a teaching post — before giving his last concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1997.
Tuckwell’s recordings of Mozart’s complete music for horn and orchestra was acclaimed as the “must-have” disc upon its release on Collins Classics some two decades ago. This highly sought-after recordsing returns to teh catalogue on Alto — at an irresistable value price.
